Real Stories. Real Change. Women Building Futures in Action

By Carol Moen
President and CEO, Women Building Futures

At Women Building Futures (WBF), we believe economic security changes lives. That is why we equip women with the knowledge and support they need to build lasting careers in the skilled trades. Careers that provide economic security, independence and confidence.

One graduate’s story captures the heart of what we do. When she joined WBF, she was living in low-income housing and struggling to afford daily necessities. Through our trades readiness program, she strengthened her skills, earned safety certifications, learned to navigate the culture of the trades, and practiced job interview techniques. But the biggest shift was internal. She found her confidence. Today, she operates heavy equipment in the mining industry and owns her own home. Economic security achieved!

Stories like hers inspire us. But they also remind us that the path to success is not always straightforward.

Tradeswomen are still pushing against persistent barriers in the skilled trades. From limited access to training and childcare to job sites that lack proper facilities, personal protective equipment, and inclusive workplace cultures, the challenges are layered. Breaking into the industry is just the first step. The bigger task lies in building pathways that help women stay, grow, and thrive in the trades.

Since 1998, WBF has supported thousands of women and gender-diverse individuals to take charge of their futures. We surround them with wraparound support before, during, and after training. Career coaching, mentorship, ongoing training, and a community of peers make all the difference. Helping women grow in their trade is at the heart of OAWA Alberta’s work as well.

That is why partnerships matter. Our collaboration with OAWA Alberta strengthens our ability to support women at every stage of their careers. We are united by a shared purpose; to increase women’s representation in the skilled trades and ensure they have the knowledge and support they need to succeed long-term. Together, we amplify our voice, advocate for inclusive workplaces, and expand opportunities across Alberta.

Looking ahead, we envision a stronger, more inclusive skilled trades industry where women are not just joining the workforce but advancing and reshaping it. And we are proud to be part of that change.
