Trade Winds to Success is proudly celebrating its 20th anniversary, a remarkable milestone in its mission to empower Indigenous Peoples in Alberta through skilled trades training. By providing pre-trades education and ongoing support, Trade Winds helps individuals secure employment and Journey Person status in the construction industry, leading to economic self-sufficiency.
Offering career training in fields such as Carpentry, Electrical, Ironworking, Industrial Mechanics, Plumbing, Steamfitting, and Welding, Trade Winds equips students with the skills they need to succeed in the trades while contributing to meaningful, real-world projects like building sustainable housing for communities. This hands-on approach ensures students gain practical experience while making a tangible difference in their nations.
Over the years, Trade Winds has expanded its reach, bringing life-changing programs to communities like Calgary, Siksika, Blood Tribe, Sturgeon Lake, and Course Lake—areas that traditionally lack access to these vital opportunities. As Walter Cardinal, Apprenticeship Retention Officer, states: “Industry is evolving. We don’t want anybody to solve our problems for us. We want to be part of the solution. It’s about letting us prove our capabilities.”
Indigenous Peoples have long been underrepresented in the trades, but programs like Trade Winds are changing that narrative. With a proven track record of success, the program is breaking down barriers, offering real opportunities for Indigenous individuals to thrive in a field that has historically overlooked them.
To mark its 20th anniversary and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, Trade Winds will host a special event. Stay tuned for details and join in honoring the strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. For more information, visit www.tradewindstosuccess.ca.
