Building Confidence, One Weld at a Time

Entering a male-dominated field as a first-year welder, I quickly realized that my biggest barriers weren’t just learning the technical side of welding; they were overcoming self-doubt. Coming from an administrative background, stepping into the trades was a complete shift. I went from working behind a desk to standing on a shop floor, learning how to use tools I’d never touched before. Feeling like I had to work twice as hard to prove myself, there were moments when I questioned if I really belonged. However, it is in those moments, I reminded myself why I started: I wanted to build something real with my own hands and push past the limits I once thought I had.

Over time, I am finding my rhythm and my confidence. The more I showed up, asked questions, and stayed consistent, the more I realized that growth comes from the uncomfortable moments, the times when you’re unsure but keep going anyway. That’s how you get stronger, both in your trade and in yourself.

My proudest accomplishment so far has been taking a chance on a completely new career path and seeing it through. Starting from scratch was intimidating, but the courage it took to step into this field taught me resilience, patience, and pride in my work.

As an apprentice, I’m still learning every day, but that’s part of what keeps me motivated. Looking ahead, my goal is to continue developing my skills, earning new certifications, and one day mentoring other women who are just beginning their journey in the trades. I want to help build safe, inclusive spaces where women can thrive, learn, and feel supported.

If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be this: don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Every weld, even the imperfect ones, is part of your growth. Keep your head high, stay curious, and never underestimate your strength.

To any woman considering a career in the trades, take the leap! Believe in your ability to learn, to grow, and to make your mark. You belong here.
