Celebrating Sweet Success

On November 23, 2023 OAWA hosted our annual gala to celebrate our newest female Journeypersons and to present the annual Tradeswoman Trailblazer and Extraordinary Employer Awards. Held at the Bella Vista and hosted by Stephanie O’Brien, the theme of the event this year was Sweet Success and included a fabulous selection of desserts, including our Signature Dessert, the Apprentice’s Delight, as well as a chocolate fountain and candy bar.

For the first time, this year’s event included a Silent Auction, with funds raised going towards a scholarship program dedicated to supporting women in their pursuit of education and career advancement in underrepresented trades. Proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund and allow us to provide support to more aspiring tradeswomen. Special thanks to our generous donors who provided auction items, including a seat at the Carpenter Millwright College and a trip for two anywhere Provincial Airlines and Air Borealis fly. The auction was another sweet success as we raised more than $22,000 for the scholarship fund. Keep an eye on our social media and website for details on these scholarships coming in Spring 2024!

The gala was attended by more than 70 people, including tradeswomen, Government officials, and industry and community partners. Greetings came from:

  • EST Romero, Atlantic Canada Regional Council
  • Sharlene Jones, ADM, Immigration, Population Growth & Skills, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

A video message was delivered by the Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

There were twelve outstanding nominees for the Tradeswoman Trailblazer Award, making the selection process challenging. It is incredible to see so many women breaking down barriers and acting as role models and mentors for other women and girls! Our 2023 Trailblazer Award winner is Sarah Gillam Howse, who currently works as an Electrical Inspector for the City of St. John’s.

GJ Cahill took home the Extraordinary Employer Award from a field of three exceptional nominees. Cahill was recognized for providing a workplace which is welcoming, encouraging, respectful, inclusive and safe, as well as offering mentorship opportunities for tradeswomen.

During the evening we also recognized our newest Red Seal Journeypersons, several of whom spoke about the career journey. Congratulations go out to:

  • Melanie Perran – Red Seal Welder
  • Sue Copp – Red Seal Carpenter
  • Robyn Power – Red Seal Plumber
  • Brittany Hedderson – Red Seal Electrician
  • Marlene Leamon – Red Seal Electrician
  • Molly Drew – Red Seal Carpenter

Special thanks to all of our generous donors and everyone involved in making this event so successful! Planning is already underway for our 2024 event. Stay tuned!
