Launching Our National Skilled Tradeswomen Profile Series
The Office to Advance Women Apprentices celebrated International Women’s Day with the release of its new tradeswomen video series and virtual learning sessions for women interested in a skilled trade. Our goal is to promote a more gender balanced workforce, encouraging the inclusion of more women participating in our national skilled trades industry.
The video series will contribute to our Trade Teasers initiative, adapted to roll out in accordance with COVID-19 health measures, will include interactive, introductory virtual sessions and made available to women throughout the country. Our series begins with videos from here in Newfoundland and Labrador with plans to film stories in every province we represent, showing the diversity of tradeswomen across our country.
Karen Walsh, our executive director, says times are changing in the trades. “We’re excited to share the accomplishments and stories of women who were successful in pursuing rewarding and fulfilling careers in industries that were once typically seen as male...We chose to launch during the week of International Women’s Day because this year’s theme of #ChooseToChallenge is so perfect for our campaign celebrating women and organizations which are working towards more inclusive workplaces.”
To assist us in achieving our goal, we encourage tradeswomen and all our partners: employers, trades unions, government, and training Institutions to help us inspire more women into skilled trades by sharing our videos and continuing to #ChooseToChallenge.

The Office to Advance Women Apprentices
Canada has 1.2 million construction workers, but women only currently represent approximately 4% of the construction trades.
The Office to Advance Women Apprentices Newfoundland and Labrador was established in 2009 with funding from the provincial government, with a mandate of increasing employment opportunities for women in the skilled trades.
The office provides ongoing support to tradeswomen seeking work or already employed in the skilled trades. This includes providing career services, employment supports, and networking opportunities for tradeswomen. The Office to Advance Women Apprentices has partnerships with employers, trades unions, government, and training institutions to assist in accomplishing these goals.
The organization has expanded and now has six provincial offices across the country in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan
